Holy Week & Easter 2025

Holy Week is the most important week of the Christian year as we walk with Jesus through the story of his last days on Earth to the wonder of the empty tomb and the joy of the Resurrection. Please join us across the Benefice for services!

Palm Sunday – 13th April

Palm Sunday Service with Procession

Starting at St Giles’, 10.15am, with the liturgy of the Palms. We remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. We then process, singing, up the Woodstock Road reaching St Margaret’s for the liturgy of the Passion.

Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater, St Giles’, 6.30pm

Beautiful liturgical performance of the ancient hymn.

Monday 14th April & Tuesday 15th April

Candlelit Compline, St Giles’, 8pm

Short, reflective night prayer entirely by candlelight

Wednesday 16th April

Tenebrae, St Giles’, 8pm

Service of the shadows. Candles are gradually extinguished as the story of the passion is read.

Maundy Thursday – 17th April

Maundy Thursday Eucharist with Stripping of the Altars, St Margaret’s, 8pm

We remember the Last Supper when Jesus washed the disciples feet. The church is stripped of its decoration and the service ends in a silent watch into the night.

Good Friday – 18th April

Hot Cross Bun Service St Margaret’s, 10am

Service for families – come and learn about the Easter Story!

BCP Choral Mattins, St Giles’, 10.30am

Choral service with Litany from 1662 Book of Common Prayer.

The Three Hours of Devotion, St Margaret’s, 12pm

12noon-1.45pm, Reflections & Silence (drop-in)

1.45pm – Liturgy of Good Friday. A stark and moving service as we focus on Jesus’ death.

Holy Saturday

Easter Vigil & Eucharist St Margaret’s, 8pm

The climax of the week. Beginning around a fire outside, we start in darkness recounting stories of God before the light is spread in the church and we have the first Eucharist of Easter to celebrate the Resurrection. Join us for drinks together afterwards. With St Margaret’s Choir.
