What about the changes to the tower and the new lantern arch and clock?
When the church was designed in the 1880s it was to have a full height tower. A drawing of the original design is on display inside the porch. For reasons which we don’t know, perhaps lack of money, the tower was never completed and building stopped at the present height. The current buttresses of the porch/tower are capped very crudely, evidently in a hurry. While we are not aiming to complete the construction of the original tower we would like to improve the buttresses in keeping with the architecture of the rest of the church.
There are currently two short pier bases where the path to the porch meets the pavement. We do not know what the original intention for these was, although a photograph in the county archive from the Taunt collection which predates the war memorial shows a wooden fence around the perimeter of the church curtilage. We would like to introduce a wrought iron arch with a metal lantern in an appropriate traditional style to mark the entrance to the church and to enhance the visual amenity. Drawings are shown in the application. We would also like to introduce a clock in the south facing wall above the porch door.
